“ What’s the difference between a muffin and a cupcake, I asked a pastry chef friend of mine one day while devouring one of his opulently buttered lemon poppy seed muffins. ‘Nothing,’ he said, explaining that when it comes to breakfast, Americans have a Puritanical inhibition. ‘Muffins are just an excuse to eat cake for breakfast,’ he said.
